In June of this year, Yang Hongtao was appointed as Sogou CTO, responsible for the overall technical direction of Sogou. Previously, he was the boss of the Desktop Business Unit and was responsible for Sogou’s core input methods and browsers. After becoming the CTO, Yang Hongtao first proposed Sogou’s development direction of “natural interaction and knowledge computing†and increased input in voice technology. Prior to this article, Lei Fengwang reported that Sogou’s product concept in voice technology was “abandoning general-purpose assistants and sogou’s voice tree is rooted deeperâ€. Lei Feng Network (search "Lei Feng Net" public concern) : You mentioned in the speech just now, thinking from a product point of view and technical perspective of artificial intelligence, there will be a different discovery. Sogou is more willing to think from the perspective of products, focusing on solving the actual needs of users. We want to understand how this viewpoint was formed.
Yang Hongtao: It mainly comes from the experience of doing products for so many years. Just now I also mentioned a failed example inside Sogou. Sogou voice assistant. It uses good technology, dialogue techniques and knowledge maps to make such a product form. However, it does not think from the perspective of what the user wants, but it should use this technology and show off. From a product perspective, in a sense, this is a direction of deviation. Of course, from a technical point of view, because good technology uses the right place, the value will be even greater. With conversational voice assistants, if you make a generic form, you may not have the value of a scene in a car or living room.
Lei Feng network: There are many vertical scenes, Sogou how to feel in which vertical scene to put power?
Yang Hongtao: Looking at the level of user demand, combined with the technical capabilities of Sogou can make the best experience in which scenario. For example, a guest who mentioned the example of face recognition just now uses face recognition to measure age. Such a product is generally not done by Sogou because it is just fun and the heat is short. This is a product issue. In turn, if we use this technique to classify albums, I think the meaning will be even greater.
Lei Fengwang: Now there is a situation in the industry, that is, Internet companies will introduce experts and talents in the academic world to ensure that they are at the forefront of the industry. Do not know what actions Sogou in this regard?
Yang Hongtao: Sogou’s internal technical team is keeping a close eye on the frontiers of the academic field. We must follow up on the top-level achievements that are sent to the best publications. Digesting cutting-edge results into products and applications is what our team is good at. Just now I also talked to other guests about how important the top academics are in the field of product applications. I have an immature view that these top academic experts are less important and they contribute to the research perspective, but they may not be able to play such an important role in the application field. Many academic achievements cannot be used in application areas. Only some of them can be used. However, as long as they have good products, everyone can solve them.
Examples of speech recognition. We are able to do 96% and 97% with the information flight. We have data from the input method. The company also has its own toB data accumulation and technology. The last 2%, 3% we can not solve, so we do a voice modification function, use the product to solve. In short, there are good products, product iterations continue to produce data, so that the value brought by it is greater than the progress of technology.
Lei Feng network: When it comes to artificial intelligence, it will think of training data and algorithms. Sogou has input-method data that is very relevant to the user. What is the uniqueness of the input method that is of great help to speech recognition technology? And we noticed that X-Fly first started with speech and also made input methods. Is this a coincidence?
Yang Hongtao: Let's talk about it. For Sogou, if there is no user using the voice recognition feature in the Sogou input method, we have absolutely no chance to do this technology and do not even think about it. It is a means to enter the mobile internet (the main business is toB), and it is good to see how it can be done.
Lei Fengwang: What are the actions of Sogou in terms of computer vision and images?
Yang Hongtao: Sogou's work in this area is based on image search products. A good enough image search requires a good enough understanding of the image content. There are no other product forms yet.
Lei Fengwang: There is a question about you personally. We understand that there was no CTO position before Sogou. What is the reason for adding such a position now?
Yang Hongtao: There is nothing too profound in this matter. Sogou as a whole is a product company that emphasizes technical genes. I will participate in a very important task, that is, Sogou’s advancement in technology and strategy. Our company is not only a search engine, there are many user-oriented products, we need to consider how to apply artificial intelligence technology to include input methods, browsers and other products, can not produce more value. This is a directional work. We propose that the two things Sogou needs to do are natural interaction and knowledge calculation. How to recommend the progress in these two aspects is also something we need to consider.
