Plant Factory Strategic Alliance Established to Accelerate Application in LED Agriculture

On December 5, 2010, the “Plant Factory Innovation Achievement Conference” was held in the lecture hall of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Dozens of internationally renowned companies such as Panasonic (China) Electrician, Taiwan Everlight, Yangzi Electric, and Ou Lin Group signed a strategic cooperation agreement to innovate in the fields of LED plant lighting, industrial control, air conditioning environmental control, and nutrient solution. The market development and other agreements were reached and a strategic alliance was signed. The convening of the conference not only marked the official birth of the first home-based plant factory in China, but also heralded the formal formation of a strategic alliance for plant plant research and development.

The plant factory is recognized as the most advanced development stage of facility agriculture in the world. It integrates modern technologies such as modern biotechnology, information technology, new materials, mechanical engineering and artificial environment control. The output can reach dozens of times and even hundreds of times in open field cultivation. It can also be produced on non-cultivable land such as Gobi, desert, island, water surface, polar, space and even urban 1f3a skyscrapers. It is understood that the Institute of Agricultural Environment and Sustainable Development of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences has been engaged in the application research of LED in plant seedling plants since 2003. In 2006, it designed and built the first closed LED artificial light plant factory in China and developed it. The corresponding LED light environment control software and light environment control device are provided. In April 2009, the research team also successfully developed the first intelligent plant factory in China, using LED and fluorescent lamps as artificial light sources, and put them into operation in Changchun. At present, Philips, Yiguang, etc. have cooperated with the Academy of Agricultural Sciences on LED lighting in agriculture.

Artificial light has become one of the important means of plant production. The artificial light sources used in the field of plants for many years mainly include high-pressure sodium lamps, fluorescent lamps, metal halide lamps, incandescent lamps, etc. The outstanding disadvantages of these light sources are high energy consumption and high operating costs. Energy costs account for about 50% to 60% of all operating costs. Therefore, improving luminous efficiency and reducing energy consumption has always been an important issue in artificial light lighting applications in the field of plants. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture, the total area of ​​plant tissue culture in China is over 20 million square meters, and the output value is about 20 billion yuan. With the continuous development of modern agriculture, the demand for agricultural lighting is still expanding, but with the substantial increase in power consumption. As the concept of energy conservation continues to deepen, the huge market opportunities and energy consumption of agricultural lighting pose new challenges to traditional agricultural lighting technology, and provide an excellent opportunity for the development and application of new agricultural lighting.

The characteristics of LED light source and the existing research foundations show that LED as a plant illumination source can be widely used in plant cultivation, greenhouse light supplement, plant tissue culture, plant factories, to promote plant growth, regulate plant morphology, build energy, environmental protection, etc. Multi-faceted advantages, not only can emit light with narrow light, such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, infrared, etc., and can be arbitrarily combined according to different needs of animals and plants, and it is also a cold light source with low heat characteristics. Proximity of plants and improvement of space utilization can not only provide reasonable light environmental conditions for the growth of agricultural organisms, reduce the use of chemicals such as pesticides and hormones, ensure food safety, but also be a low-energy green light source with broad application. The future is an important development trend of future plant illumination sources.
