State Grid expects high growth in cable investment during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan period

“It is expected that investment in China's wire and cable industry will maintain rapid growth during the 12th Five-Year Plan period. It is expected that 14 high DC projects will be built in Jinping-Suanning, Golmud-Lhasa, Xiluodu-Zhexi, and Huaidong-Chengdu.” Yang Yingjian, chief engineer of the State Grid Electric Power Research Institute, disclosed information at the first China Cable Industry Chain Development and Investment Summit.

Based on the national construction situation in the “12th Five-Year Plan”, the summit conducted an in-depth discussion on the development prospects, investment situation and technological changes of China's electric cable industry, and focused on analyzing the trend of changes in raw material costs, exploring new modes of industrial development and emerging growth points. At the meeting, Yang Yingjian, chief engineer of the State Grid Electric Power Research Institute, gave a report on the application of the UHV transmission technology and its outlook on the cable technology requirements for the UHV power grid construction and the stimulation of the cable demand brought about by the rural power grid reform. He believes that due to the adverse distribution of China's energy resources and power load centers, UHV power transmission is in line with China's national conditions and the development direction of power grid transmission, the future of smart grid will be in the direction of automation, interaction, and information.

Yang Zonggong introduced that UHV power transmission has four advantages: large capacity, long distance, low loss, and small footprint. He disclosed that according to the State Grid’s forecast, Jinping-Southern and Golmud will be built during the 12th Five-Year Plan period. There are 14 extra high DC projects in Lhasa, Xiluodu-Zhexi, Huaidong-Chengdu, etc. The "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" exchange project forms a network of three vertical and three horizontal and one ring networks, namely, Ximeng-Nanjing, Zhangbei-Nanchang, Mengxi-Changsha, Shaanbei-Weifang, Jingbian-Lianyungang and Ya'an-Shanghai. It is understood that the approval of the 570-kilometer UHVAC project in Huainan-Zhebei-Shanghai has been approved. In the year of 2015, four major synchronous networks will be formed, that is, the “Three Chinas” synchronous power grid will be the core through DC and the northeast, northwest and south China grids will be interconnected. By 2020, coal and electricity bases, hydropower bases, nuclear power bases and renewable energy sources will be completed. In addition, he also pointed out that during the “12th Five-Year Plan” period, China’s coal-fired power generation capacity will reach 150 million kilowatts, hydropower 54.5 million kilowatts, and wind power 60 million kilowatts.
