The international journal *Electronic Design Technology (EDN)* is about to celebrate its 60th anniversary. Over the past six decades, the electronics industry has seen tremendous transformation. As we look ahead, what breakthroughs will analog electronics bring in the next 60 years? Here's a glimpse into the future from author Steve Taranovich.
**Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS)**
MEMS has taken the top spot in the list of the top ten predictions for analog electronics over the next six decades. According to Steve Whalley, Chief Strategy Officer of the MEMS and Sensor Industry Alliance (MSIA), MEMS technology differs fundamentally from traditional IC technology. This distinction will lead to a wide range of unique MEMS design structures, driving innovation across the industry. Unlike the single architecture model of Intel processors, multiple MEMS designs will coexist in the future.
By 2076, proprietary MEMS solutions will become obsolete, and the market will expand to trillions of dollars. Wearable devices will evolve into non-intrusive systems, seamlessly integrating into our daily lives without disrupting them. These advanced wearables will be embedded in thin clothing or even our skin, becoming an extension of our bodies. They will include not just sensors but also integrated regulators, processors, batteries, wireless communication modules, and antennas.
With roll-to-roll printing becoming the standard manufacturing process, traditional wafer fabrication facilities may no longer exist. T-Sensors—initially designed to address global challenges like hunger, pollution, and clean energy—will eventually evolve into P-Sensors (petascale sensors). Data security will improve significantly, and internal "junk data" will no longer be an issue.
**New IC Processes and Configurations**
In addition to MEMS, new IC processes and configurations are expected to play a major role in shaping the future of analog electronics. With advancements in theoretical physics, nanotechnology, and solid-state physics, new materials and structures such as giant magnetostrictive (GMR) sandwich structures, glass wafers, spintronics, carbon nanotubes, and quantum computing will become key research areas.
The chemical periodic table continues to grow, with four new elements recently added. Scientists are excited about the potential for discovering more elements, especially as we explore beyond our solar system. The discovery of new substances on asteroids could open up entirely new possibilities for material science and electronics.
**Top Ten Predictions for Analog Electronics in the Next 60 Years:**
1. **MEMS**
2. **New IC Processes and Configurations**
3. **Vacuum Channel ICs**

6. **Organic Femtotechnology**
7. **Medical Implants**
8. **Optical Laser Advances**
9. **3D Imaging and Holography**
10. **Thought-Controlled Electronic Devices**
As these technologies continue to develop, they will redefine how we interact with the world around us, making electronics more intuitive, efficient, and deeply integrated into our lives.
