IBM develops human brain neuron simulation chip to promote cognitive computer development

In order to achieve the mega-megabits per second required for real-time analysis of massive data to meet the needs of a large number of sensor flow information in the future (for example, the SKA super-wave telescope to be built in 2024), IBM is developing A 3D chip that mimics the operation of human brain neurons, which can clear the way for future cognitive computers. IBM has announced that the South African National Research Foundation and the Netherlands ASTRON Institute of Radio Wave Astronomy (NIRA) have also jointly invested in this research project to develop real-time analysis technology for the massive data of the superwave telescope in the Australian desert. The ASTRON project will install 64 antenna prototypes in South Africa to assist IBM and NIRA in creating a super-computing architecture that can analyze Exabyte data in real time. ASTRON and IBM Exascale Technology Center researchers emphasize that this cognitive computing technology not only learns and simulates the human brain, but also improves energy efficiency.

Michelle said: "If you analyze a typical microchip, only one in a million of the transistors are used to perform functions, while the other 98% is used for cooling. But in the brain, 40% of the capacity is used for execution. Function, 50% for interconnection, and only 10% for cooling, so we want to develop a computer that is closer to this ratio."

First, a liquid coolant is used as a battery electrolyte to supply charge ions to the 3D chip. The coolant/electrolyte will flow into the channel between the stacked chips, and the heat sink will serve as the battery electrode. After flowing through the 3D chip stack, the fluid will return to the central repository and be cooled and charged before flowing back to the chip.

In order to process the signals from the SKA antenna, the research team will use these 3D chip stacks that can be cooled by liquid to create a miniature server prototype that will help scientists capture the weak signals after the Big Bang. And because the information from SKA greatly exceeds network traffic, the program can eventually process business, financial and healthcare information, allowing future cognitive computers to provide exascale-level data processing capabilities.
