NXP achieves breakthrough in sound quality with 9.5V boost voltage in mobile micro speakers

Shanghai, China, March 4, 2013-In an effort to achieve better sound quality and greater output volume, leading mobile phone manufacturers have been increasing the internal voltage used to drive miniature speakers-from 3.3V to 5V, And recently it is as high as 8V. At the 2013 Global Mobile Communications Conference held last week, NXP Semiconductors (Nasdaq: NXPI) launched its new TFA9890 speaker driver IC, which enables an unparalleled 9.5 for integrated DC / DC converters V boost voltage. Increasing the voltage margin of the audio driver IC prevents the amplifier from clipping peaks and maintains high sound quality at maximum volume. TFA9890 is currently the most powerful driver for miniature speakers. It can safely drive record-breaking 4 W peak power to a standard 8 ohm speaker (typically rated at 0.5 W), which significantly improves mobile phones, tablets, and TVs. And portable speakers for sound output and sound quality.

Shawn Scarlett, Global Marketing Director of NXP ’s mobile audio solutions, said: “As mobile phone products continue to develop in the direction of multimedia devices, customer needs are very clear: whether to have better sound quality is to distinguish between mobile phones that are only used and people who love them. The standard of mobile phones. We launched the TFA9887 audio IC last year. Its commercial success is an advancement for the entire industry, and TFA9890 improves the sound quality standards of mobile devices. "

Advanced speaker protection for superior sound quality

Traditional methods require the removal of bass frequencies to avoid damage to the speakers, and the TFA9890 uses the highly acclaimed advanced speaker protection features introduced by TFA9887, which can always achieve safe operation under conditions close to peak output. The device's fully integrated protection features include adaptive speaker amplitude control, which is a unique method that can compensate for changes in the sound environment in the real world. The IC can measure the current and voltage of the input speaker and use this information to adjust the protection algorithm to adapt to changes such as aging and damage of the housing and blockage of the speaker port.

With its speaker amplitude protection algorithm based on the feedback principle, TFA9890, a single-chip device that integrates NXP CoolFlux DSP, a class D amplifier with current detection and a DC-DC converter, can provide almost 8 ohm speakers with power It is twice that TFA9887 can provide, and the typical value of sound output is 6-12 dB higher. In addition to increasing the speaker volume, the 9.5V boost voltage of the DC-DC converter can also improve sound quality by increasing the voltage margin and eliminating amplifier clipping.

Other circuits and algorithms that improve sound quality include advanced clipping suppression algorithms, which can monitor audio performance and even avoid clipping when the power supply begins to sink. Bandwidth expansion will increase the low frequency response of the speaker below resonance. In addition, the intelligent DC-DC boost converter in TFA9890 can prevent the audio system from causing battery undervoltage problems in mobile devices. Advanced embedded algorithms are available without a separate license, allowing designers to customize sound quality and selectively optimize mobile phone performance.

TFA9890 has launched samples for major customers and will be officially released in the second quarter of 2013. NXP has demonstrated the performance of the product at the 2013 Global Mobile Communications Conference held last week (Hall 7, Hall A111); to watch the video, you can also click:
