Soraa CTO responds to Cree to question the MR16 LED light design problem

Everyone seems to agree that the design and production of LED-based MR16 lamps has become difficult due to space-constrained form factors, but there is still a lack of consensus on the best solution for solid-state lighting products. In October, Cree published a feature article on the design of MR16 lamps, which presented the actual reference design. Soraa objected to Cree's partial statement about GaN-on-GaN LEDs, and Soraa's chief technology officer Mike Krames responded on the blog.

Compared to other manufacturers' products, Soraa's LEDs are different in many ways. First, the fact is that homogeneous substrates and active semiconductors have fewer defects and can improve light output. Soraa also uses LED UV light and a variety of phosphor mixing methods to achieve warm color temperature and high color rendering.

Cree wrote in the article that the UV emitter in the MR16 lamp design will cause the bulb to emit a lot of UV energy. This type of radiation is hazardous and requires attention to be more influential when used in the lighting of valuable art. However, MikeKrames said that less than 0.1% of the LED radiation wavelength is below 400nm.

In the article, Cree also questioned the lifetime of LEDs that can be driven at higher power densities because the associated heat causes color shifts that are unrelated to LED components. Soraa claims that the MR16 lamp with a rated life of 25,000 hours in its closures solves problems such as reliability and service life.
