Entering this magical library feels like stepping into another dimension. Only a hundred or so people worldwide have had this unique experience. As soon as I walked into the MR Digital Library, I was struck by the four wall paintings that seemed to bring books to life. Once I put on the HoloLens, the magic truly began. Gazing at the wall, I could summon different books, each revealing something extraordinary—like a Beijing Opera figure appearing before me, teaching poetry and etiquette through animated lessons. Unlike a regular library, here the books come alive with dynamic animations. It's a living library where readers can immerse themselves in the stories.
One unforgettable moment was when I looked at a "book" on the wall with my MR glasses. A cartoon monkey leaped out, right in front of my eyes! I couldn’t help but reach out as if to touch his golden staff.
From August 23 to August 27, the 15th Beijing International Book Fair took place at the China International Exhibition Center. Many might assume it's just about selling paper books, but this event showcased far more. There was a special digital interactive zone, introducing AR, VR, and MR technologies for the first time. Visitors could use cutting-edge tech to interact with book characters and enjoy MR experiences for free.
In the digital interactive area, the highlight was Enlighten Digital's nation's first MR digital library. Here, e-books were transformed into immersive experiences. Wearing MR glasses, you could see mythical creatures like phoenixes and dragons, and even meet Han Feng Tong, teaching traditional etiquette through engaging performances. These "books" ranged from mythical imagery to interactive music and games. On paper, no longer just static words or patterns, these MR libraries brought content to life using Microsoft's HoloLens.
At the MR Digital Library, dynamic book content is integrated into the HoloLens program. When readers enter the library, the positioning system allows them to view corresponding animations on the wall. We showcase mythical animations like those of phoenixes, chaos, and kirins, along with traditional etiquette lessons like "Hanfeng Boys." There are also fun reproductions of scenes from "Journey to the West," featuring cartoon versions of Peking Opera characters. Interactive elements like animal spokespeople add to the entertainment.
VR, AR, and MR technologies offer the publishing industry a chance to innovate. They enhance the reading experience, make books more personalized, and address issues like piracy. Li Yuxi, Director of Beijing Publishing Group, emphasized the importance of embracing these technologies to transform the industry. While challenges remain, such as content production and standardization, Enlighten Digital’s MR library solution is paving the way.
This groundbreaking MR digital library will be showcased at the 12th China Beijing International Cultural and Creative Industry Expo from September 11-13. Don't miss your chance to experience it!
Mixed reality (MR) takes virtual reality to the next level, blending virtual scenes with real-world environments to create interactive feedback loops. Microsoft's HoloLens enables users to interact with digital content seamlessly. Enlighten Digital World, part of Tsinghua Hedi Holdings, has pioneered the "R+" concept, integrating VR, AR, MR, and holographic reality into innovative platforms. Their work spans industries from education to tourism, creating immersive experiences through their "Kingdom of the Beasts" IP.
