Essential Mobile Module, Essential Panoramic Camera Experience Notes
When we first got the Essential Phone, we hadn’t had a chance to try out the Essential 360 Camera. This is the first official accessory from Essential designed for its smartphone, and now that we've gotten our hands on the 360 Camera, it's time to see what it has to offer.
The Essential 360 Camera is a magnetic attachment that turns your phone into a 360-degree camera capable of capturing both still images and 4K videos. It features two 12-megapixel sensors, paired with wide-angle fisheye lenses offering a 210-degree field of view, and powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor. Despite not using the same titanium and ceramic build as the Essential Phone, it still feels solid and well-made.
Measuring just 67mm x 32mm x 12mm, this is one of the smallest and most compact 360 cameras on the market. Weighing only 35 grams, it’s easy to carry around and store without any hassle.
The Essential 360 Camera attaches directly to the back of the Essential Phone via two magnetic pins, eliminating the need for Bluetooth pairing. Simply attach it, and you're ready to start shooting—no complicated setup required.
Upon startup, a blue LED light illuminates the front of the camera. Once you’re ready to record, the light turns green. However, once you hit the record button, the LED goes off completely. This subtle design makes it clear when the camera is actively recording.
While the Essential 360 Camera is easy to use, it has a major limitation: it’s only compatible with the Essential Phone. Although Essential claims future compatibility with upcoming smartphones, the current model is tied to just one device. For many users, this could be a deal-breaker, especially if they don’t own an Essential Phone or aren’t sure it will ever become mainstream.
Moreover, the software experience leaves much to be desired. The app is still in development, and we noticed several crashes during testing. Even after updates, performance hasn’t improved significantly. Startup times are slow, and the interface lacks basic controls, such as a switch between the 360 camera and the phone’s standard cameras. To do that, you have to physically remove the 360 camera and restart the app, which is frustrating.
Optically, the camera performs reasonably well for a 360-degree device. It handles wide-angle distortion fairly well, but faces can look distorted, especially when shot up close. Chromatic aberration is also present, causing purple fringing in high-contrast areas.
Video quality tends to be better than stills, though even the best photos lack sharpness in certain areas. Splicing issues are rare but do occur occasionally. When everything works smoothly, the experience is seamless, but the overall value doesn’t quite justify the price tag.
At $270 CAD in Canada, the Essential 360 Camera is expensive compared to other 360 options on the market. If you already own an Essential Phone and are curious about 360 content, you might want to wait until more features and updates are available. Until then, it’s hard to recommend this accessory to the average user.
Ultimately, the Essential 360 Camera is a compact and convenient option for those who love 360 content. But if you’re not already a fan, it won’t change your mind. It’s a niche product with some great features, but also plenty of room for improvement.
