NB-IoTA is challenged, NB-IoTA is highly secure

In terms of network deployment, three major telecom operators have already initiated NB-IoT network construction and are actively promoting related services. As a result, the coverage has gradually expanded across the country. The scale of NB-IoT network deployment is among the global leaders, with some application projects moving from pilot demonstrations to large-scale deployment. While NB-IoT has seen widespread adoption, there are still areas that need improvement, especially in terms of security. Wenku emphasized that NB-IoT is a key technology for achieving massive connectivity and universal interconnection. Looking ahead, low-power, wide-coverage, and high-connectivity solutions are expected to account for more than 60% of the total IoT demand. Industry stakeholders are working together to promote the development of the NB-IoT ecosystem while also focusing on its long-term health and sustainability. The growth of NB-IoT is expected to drive the comprehensive application of the Internet of Things. Many industry experts believe that we are entering an era of the "Internet of Everything." After years of development, IoT has found its way into various industries, but challenges remain, such as reducing costs, improving energy efficiency, and enhancing network performance. NB-IoT was introduced at just the right time, offering wide coverage, high connection density, low power consumption, and low cost—key features that align with the evolving needs of the IoT market. It also fosters secondary innovation based on its platform. The development of NB-IoT in China is now leading globally. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology clearly outlined in its 2016–2020 development plan the goal of building and improving NB-IoT infrastructure to support urban management and key industry applications. This year, several policy documents, including the "Notice on Comprehensively Advancing the Construction and Development of Mobile Internet of Things (NB-IoT)" and the "Announcement on the Requirements for Frequency Utilization of NB-IoT Systems," were issued to accelerate NB-IoT deployment and industry adoption. 2017 marked the first year of commercial-scale NB-IoT deployment in China. The country's NB-IoT industry is now at the forefront globally. In terms of network expansion, the three major telecom companies have launched NB-IoT networks, achieving nationwide coverage. Some application projects have transitioned from pilot testing to large-scale implementation. For instance, over 900 communities in Fuzhou have signed up to replace traditional water meters with NB-IoT-enabled smart meters. Yingtan City’s Cao Shumin once highlighted that the NB-IoT network in Yingtan is deeply covered, with more than 10,000 users currently and nearly 20,000 planned. These examples demonstrate that China is leading in NB-IoT application demonstrations and deployments worldwide. On the manufacturing side, many Chinese companies are capable of mass-producing NB-IoT chips and modules, forming a complete industrial chain covering chips, modules, systems, and platforms. Despite its technological advantages, the NB-IoT industry is still in its early stages, facing several challenges: First, there is a need for better industry understanding. Some companies involved in IoT applications are not fully aware of NB-IoT's benefits or have not yet mastered its technologies, continuing to use traditional GSM and GPRS modules. Second, the standardization process must be accelerated to achieve economies of scale. While IoT standards primarily focus on connecting wireless terminals to mobile networks, the next step should involve connecting these devices to real-world objects. For example, companies must not only connect NB-IoT to the wireless network but also ensure it can communicate with physical assets like cows. Third, public NB-IoT application platforms need further development. Starting from meter reading, the technology should expand into personalized services for the general public, increasing its market share. Fourth, security capabilities must be continuously improved. Although no NB-IoT-related incident has been reported, past incidents involving traditional electricity meters show the importance of security. As NB-IoT is still emerging, its security measures may be less mature, prompting the industry to prioritize security. Facing these challenges, Wenku remains optimistic and offers the following suggestions: First, actively support the acceleration of NB-IoT technology development. Enterprises should gradually shift from GPRS to NB-IoT to build an industrial scale quickly. Encourage internet companies and startups to participate in NB-IoT development and leverage cloud computing and big data to enhance public service platforms. Second, promote the development of communication module standards. The Communication Standardization Association and related companies should collaborate to create simple, universal interfaces and unify specifications, providing guidance for NB-IoT development. Third, speed up infrastructure construction. Based on current plans, operators should accelerate deployment to achieve broad coverage and eventually implement deeper coverage in specific scenarios, laying a solid network foundation for NB-IoT. Fourth, strengthen NB-IoT security. All industry players must take responsibility for security, conducting research from interfaces, chips, networks, and platforms. Continuous improvements in security will protect user data and personal privacy, ensuring a safe and trustworthy environment for sustainable NB-IoT development.
