The soft starter, connected in series between the power supply and the controlled motor, regulates the conduction angle of the internal thyristor. This allows the motor's input voltage to gradually increase from zero according to a preset function until it reaches full voltage at the end of the start-up phase. During this soft start process, the motor’s starting torque increases gradually, along with its rotational speed. Soft starters typically offer several starting modes, each suited for different applications.
One common method is the **ramp-up soft start**, which is the simplest approach. It does not involve current feedback control but instead adjusts the thyristor’s conduction angle over time. However, this method can lead to high inrush currents during motor startup, potentially damaging the thyristor and causing disturbances on the power grid. As a result, it is rarely used in real-world applications.
Another widely used mode is the **ramp constant current soft start**. In this method, the starting current increases gradually at first and then stabilizes once it reaches a set value. This allows for better control over the motor’s acceleration, making it ideal for applications like fans and pumps where smooth and controlled starting is essential.
The **step start** method involves quickly increasing the current to a set level in the shortest possible time. This provides a fast start-up, and the initial current can be adjusted based on the load requirements.
Lastly, the **pulse shock start** method uses a brief surge of high current followed by a linear increase to the set current level. This technique is useful when overcoming significant static friction is required, such as in heavy-load applications. However, it is less commonly used in general-purpose systems due to its more complex control requirements.
In addition to these starting methods, modern soft starters often include features like overload protection, fault diagnostics, and programmable settings to optimize performance for various motor types and operating conditions. These enhancements make soft starters an essential component in industrial and commercial motor control systems, ensuring reliable and efficient operation while reducing mechanical and electrical stress on the motor and connected equipment.
