LG enters VR and pushes VR heads - UltraGear
In the first half of this year, LG unveiled a prototype of a virtual reality head-up display, and announced plans to collaborate with Valve to integrate the SteamVR platform into the device. While the news has been widely covered, LG hasn't shared many key details about the product. However, recent developments suggest that LG has officially registered a trademark for the product under the name "UltraGear."
The trademark was discovered on a website in the Netherlands and was issued by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) under the ninth product category, which includes items such as personal computers, laptops, monitors, external devices, HUDs, headphones, and VR headsets.
At this point, we only know the name and the trademark registration, and it's still unclear if "UltraGear" refers directly to the VR headset. If not, it could be a case of misinterpretation—but that’s not necessarily bad. We can still hope to see LG’s VR headset soon, possibly at CES 2018. If the speculation is right, it makes sense that LG would register the name early.
So far, the information available is limited. What we do know is that LG has shown a head-mounted prototype. According to reports, the device is expected to feature two 3.64-inch LED displays with a resolution of 1440x1280. It also seems to use a tracking system similar to the HTC Vive’s Lighthouse stations and controllers. Of course, there are still many variables before the official launch, so it's okay to stay curious and look forward to what’s coming.
