Intel releases neural network computing single-chip VPU: TSMC 16nm OEM

Intel has just unveiled its latest creation, the Movidius Myriad X VPU (Vision Processing Unit), marking a significant leap forward in technology. This groundbreaking SoC (System-on-a-Chip) is the world’s first to feature a dedicated neural network computing engine, enabling it to supercharge deep learning inference tasks across a range of applications like drones, robotics, smart cameras, virtual reality, and more. The Myriad X is a marvel of engineering, integrating an on-chip hardware module designed for high-performance, low-power neural network computations without compromising accuracy. It allows devices to perceive, interpret, and react to their environments in real-time, delivering an impressive 1 TFlop (trillions of operations per second). When combined with other computational resources, its overall performance can surpass 4 TFlops. Despite its immense capabilities, the chip remains compact, measuring just 8.8 x 8.1 mm, and consumes less than 1W of power. It's manufactured using the advanced TSMC 16nm FFC process. In addition to its neural network engine, Myriad X offers a unique suite of features that integrate imaging, visual processing, and real-time deep learning inference: - A programmable 128-bit VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) vector processor with 16 specialized vector cores tailored for computer vision tasks. This enables multiple imaging and vision application pipelines to operate simultaneously. - An enhanced MIPI interface that supports up to 16 channels, allowing direct connection of up to eight HD RGB cameras. The chip can handle an image signal processing throughput of up to 700 million pixels per second. Additionally, USB 3.1 and PCI-E 3.0 are supported for versatile connectivity options. - A robust visual accelerator with over 20 hardware accelerators, capable of performing complex tasks like optical flow and stereo depth computation without adding extra computational load. - A 2.5MB multi-core heterogeneous on-chip memory architecture that provides up to 450GB/s of internal bandwidth. This design minimizes external data transfers, reduces latency, and cuts down on power usage. - Support for 4K video encoding at 4K/30Hz H.264/H.265, and 4K/60Hz M/JPEG formats. These features make Myriad X an ideal choice for cutting-edge applications requiring both high performance and low power consumption. Its ability to handle complex tasks while maintaining efficiency positions it as a key player in the future of AI-driven devices. Attached are some images showcasing the chip's design and capabilities.
