Zuo Houchao, Founder of Qing Hitomi Visual: How to Integrate Opera Creation with Optical Motion Capture Technology
On December 22nd, the 4th National Congress of the Chinese Opera Performance Association and the first Chinese Opera Performance Art event were held in Anqing, hosted by the Chinese Opera Performance Society and the People's Government of Yixiu District, with Digital World (Beijing) Technology & Culture Co., Ltd. as the organizer. The VR Industry Summit Forum took place during the event, and VR Network was invited as a special media partner to cover the proceedings.
The forum focused on the integration of traditional Chinese opera performance arts with modern science and technology, particularly exploring how virtual reality (VR) can help transform and innovate the industry. Discussions emphasized the potential for interactive experiences and expanding the application of advanced technologies in the performing arts.
VR Network was present at the event and covered key highlights, including a keynote speech delivered by Xu Houchao, founder of Qingtong Vision, titled "Combination of Traditional Chinese Opera and Virtual Reality Technology."
Qingtong Vision, established in 2015, specializes in motion capture technology and its industrial applications. Since 2015, the company has concentrated on VR, capitalizing on the growing interest in the field after Facebook acquired Oculus in 2014. During the early years of VR’s rise, the company remained focused on motion capture, developing both hardware and software solutions.
Today, Qingtong Vision has developed its own motion capture cameras, capable of competing with leading brands like Dachang in terms of resolution and latency. The company also focuses on optimizing tracking accuracy, user interface design, and overall system performance through continuous research and development.
Currently, the company can perform motion capture for 4–6 people within a 100-square-meter space. This technology can be applied to various forms of traditional Chinese opera, such as Peking Opera and Huangmei Opera. Motion capture not only enhances VR content production but also supports real-time interaction and immersion.
By attaching markers to objects or performers, the system can replicate physical interactions in virtual environments, allowing users to experience realistic movements and object interactions. This creates a more immersive and engaging experience for audiences.
In addition to VR, Qingtong Vision also explores holographic technology to enhance stage effects, making performances more dynamic and visually striking.
The event brought together leaders from the Ministry of Culture, local governments, Tsinghua University, and industry experts. Notable attendees included Wang Xuan, President of Digital World; He Yimin, CEO of Digital World; Liu Yong, CEO of VR Virtual Reality; Zuo Houchao, founder of Qingtong Vision; Xiang Yi, Deputy Director of the New Media Department of China Intercontinental Communication Center; Li Hongxin, General Manager of Beijing Disheng Digital; Xie Haifeng, CEO of Blockboard Chuangyi Technology; and Zhang Wulong, Director of Beijing Huijing Technology Market.
Over 50 theater professionals participated in the forum, discussing the future of "Drama + VR." Additionally, 14 renowned opera masters performed a special show in Anqing, reminding everyone of their original passion for the art form and connecting with the audience.
