On December 22nd, the 4th National Congress of the Chinese Opera Performance Association and the first Chinese Opera Performance Art event were held in Anqing, organized by the Chinese Opera Performance Society and the People’s Government of Yixiu District. The event was hosted by Digital World (Beijing) Technology & Culture Co., Ltd. and featured a VR Industry Summit Forum. VR Network was honored to be a specially invited media outlet and attended the forum, where key discussions centered on the integration of traditional Chinese opera with modern technology.
The forum explored how virtual reality (VR) and interactive technologies could enhance the creative transformation and innovative development of Chinese opera performance arts. It aimed to broaden the application fields of modern science and technology and explore new directions for the industry. Discussions emphasized the potential of VR to bring traditional art forms into contemporary contexts, making them more accessible and engaging for new audiences.
Xu Houchao, founder of Qingtong Vision, delivered a keynote speech titled “Combination of Traditional Chinese Opera and Virtual Reality Technology.†He shared insights on how motion capture systems can be used to support immersive experiences in opera performances. Since its establishment in 2015, Qingtong Vision has focused on developing core motion capture technologies and their applications in the entertainment industry.
In 2015, VR began gaining attention after Facebook acquired Oculus, sparking widespread interest in the field. While many companies were chasing headlines, Qingtong Vision chose to focus on motion capture technology. Today, the company has developed its own motion capture cameras, which rival those from major industry players in terms of resolution and latency. Their software solutions also incorporate advanced tracking technologies, ensuring high precision in both position and angle tracking.
Qingtong Vision is now capable of capturing movements of up to four to six people within a 100-square-meter space. This technology has been successfully applied to various operatic performances, including Peking Opera and Huangmei Opera. Motion capture not only helps reduce animation production costs but also enhances real-time interaction in VR environments. With a delay of just 0–8 milliseconds, it ensures a smooth and immersive experience.
Beyond motion capture, the company also explores holographic theater and VR/MR content production. By integrating physical objects into virtual scenes, they create more realistic interactions. For instance, attaching markers to real-world items allows users to interact with them in VR, enhancing the sense of presence and realism.
The summit brought together industry leaders, experts, and scholars from across the country, including representatives from the Ministry of Culture, Tsinghua University, and various tech companies. Over 50 theatrical professionals participated, highlighting the growing interest in the fusion of opera and VR. Notably, 14 renowned opera masters performed a special show, reminding everyone of the power of traditional art.
As VR continues to evolve, its role in preserving and transforming cultural heritage becomes increasingly important. The event marked an important step toward a future where traditional opera meets cutting-edge technology.
