Touch chip factory Elan is the first to announce 3D face recognition solution

Since the introduction of the iPhone X, which featured 3D sensing technology, the Android ecosystem has been working hard to catch up. However, despite various efforts, a truly comprehensive and mature solution has yet to emerge in the market.

Recently, Elan, a leading touch chip manufacturer, made a significant announcement by stating that its 3D face recognition solution is expected to enter mass production in the second half of this year. Rumors had already circulated that Elan had begun promoting its technology to top-tier smartphone manufacturers in mainland China, and there are growing expectations that it could even capture a portion of the mid-to-high-end smartphone market.

According to Elan’s previous statements, the company is not only focusing on hardware but also integrating artificial intelligence into its 3D face recognition system. Their approach combines IR cameras with active light sources and depth sensing technology to create a more secure and reliable authentication method. This innovation aims to prevent fraud by ensuring that photos or videos cannot be used to bypass security measures.

The company also highlighted the use of AI-driven deep learning to enhance facial recognition accuracy. The system can quickly unlock devices while maintaining high precision in matching facial features. Additionally, it includes intelligent exposure control, allowing it to function effectively in varying lighting conditions—whether under bright sunlight or complete darkness. Even when users are wearing makeup or glasses, the system can still recognize them accurately thanks to its advanced self-learning capabilities.

Currently, Elan’s 3D face recognition solution is fully developed and ready for deployment. It is being actively promoted to major smartphone manufacturers in Taiwan and other regions. The company plans to begin sampling in the second quarter of this year, with full-scale production expected in the second half of the year. With an annual market demand of nearly 1.5 billion units, Elan is targeting a wide range of smartphone brands, aiming to establish itself as a key player in the next generation of biometric security solutions.
