Digital down converter GC4016 and its application in software radio

GC4016 is a high-performance, multi-channel digital down converter produced by Craychip. The article introduces the main characteristics and performance of GC4016, gives the application method of GC4016 in software radio , and gives the data acquisition card and microcomputer based on GC4016.

1 Introduction

Software radio is a brand-new radio technology that has been produced in recent years with the rapid development of computer and microelectronic technology. Its emergence is the third change of radio communications from analog to digital, from fixed to mobile, and from hardware to software. The main function of the multi-channel digital down-converter GC4016 produced by Graychip is to down-convert the high-speed data stream into baseband data, thus greatly alleviating the difficulty of data processing after A / D sampling.

2 Main features of GC4016

The functional block diagram of GC4016 and the digital signal processing block diagram of each of the four digital down-conversion channels are shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2, respectively.

The main features of this device are as follows:

● The input signal rate can reach 100Msps;

● With parasitic dynamic range greater than 115dB;

● There are four independent programmable down-conversion channels, the maximum available baseband bandwidth of each channel is 2.25MHz, and the parameters of each channel can be flexibly and independently programmed and set; it can also be combined into two channels, each channel The maximum available baseband bandwidth is 4.5MHz; if it is combined into a single channel, the maximum available baseband bandwidth is 9MHz;

● Each channel supports a user programmable baseband filter and a programmable resampler, thus making the device suitable for intermediate frequency processing;

● The total extraction factor is 8 ~ 16384, of which 32 ~ 16384 corresponds to each single channel; 16 ~ 32 corresponds to the combination of two channels; 8 ~ 16 corresponds to the combination of four channels;

● Sampling output can be 12bit, 16bit, 20bit or 24bit;

● Flexible and diverse output forms, which can be parallel output and serial output, and can choose the required information such as amplitude, phase, frequency or quadrature I and Q data;

● With independent modulation, phase and gain control functions;

● Using 32-bit numerically controlled local oscillator (NCO) with a resolution of 0.02Hz;

● The filters of each independent channel are five-level CIC, programmable 21-order FIR, programmable 63-order FIR, and resampling FIR.

In addition, the GC4016 also has flexible programmable features. It has a total of 255 32-bit control word registers (offset address is 00h ~ 0FFh), which can be used to determine the parameter settings of each internal function module (such as carrier center frequency, FIR filter Coefficients, extraction factors, data output format and method, etc.); users can write control words and read out certain status information through the control interface. However, when writing to the control interface, the 32-bit data and 8-bit address are divided into 5 bytes and written sequentially in a certain order, which brings more or less trouble to the system design. Although the GC4016 is more complicated to set up, it is very powerful and quite flexible to use.
