TD-LTE terminal chip development direction: multi-mode dual standby single chip

TD-LTE chip development for the future of user experience TD-LTE is essential, TD-LTE chip can mature as soon as possible? TD-LTE chip development go? Reporter discussed with experts.

With the smooth progress of TD-LTE scale testing, the date of commercial use of TD-LTE is getting closer and closer to people. When TD-LTE is officially commercialized, it may face the competition of China Unicom and China Telecom's 3G network directly. At that time, the maturity of the TD-LTE terminal will directly affect the user experience of the TD-LTE network.

People can't help but ask, what is the future development direction of TD-LTE terminal chips? Can it gain a foothold in the competition with the mature 3G terminal chips? Recently, a reporter interviewed relevant people in the industry, who The future is discussed.

Multimode is an inevitable trend

At present, although the key test in the TD-LTE scale test is still a single-mode chip. However, most chip manufacturers have developed or are developing multi-mode chips. Chip manufacturers such as Lianxin Technology have already released their multi-mode products earlier this year. Industry insiders said that multi-mode is an inevitable trend for the future development of TD-LTE terminal chips.

First, the 3G, 2G, 3G, and LTE systems will coexist for a long period of time, which requires TD-LTE to be compatible with previous models. In addition, for chips, the manufacturing costs are relatively low, and more costs are used for early research and development. The market for single-mode terminals is relatively narrow, and the multi-mode design can provide the terminal with greater market space, and the resulting scale effect will make the cost of the product lower. This is very important for the development of TD-LTE terminal chips.

It is worth mentioning that, in addition to being compatible with 2G and 3G, the common mode of TD-LTE and FDDLTE is also an important direction for the development of TD-LTE terminal chips. At present, most chip manufacturers have developed common-mode products, and most manufacturers have begun to develop common-mode TD-LTE chips. According to industry insiders, in fact, the technical difference between TD-LTE and FDD-LTE is very small, and 90% of the two parts are the same. Therefore, the realization of a common-mode product is equivalent to a product that supports one more network standard with less additional investment. At the same time, the development of common-mode products is conducive to TD-LTE going global. "We hope to achieve TDD and FDD common mode as long as LTE terminals are mentioned in the future," the source said.

Geng Xuefeng, deputy minister of the China Mobile Terminal Department, once said that China Mobile has started the two-stage bidding for TD-LTE terminals after April 2011. The ultimate goal is to achieve the TDD / FDD common mode by March 2012 Compatible with existing 2G and 3G standards.

Dual standby to solve voice problems

In the 2G and 3G era, there are many dual standby terminals on the market. They appear to meet people's individual needs. For example, one number is used for work and one number is used for life. Or one number for Beijing and one number for Guangzhou.

The reporter learned that when LTE arrives, it will first focus on promoting dual standby mobile phones. Dual standby will become an important method to solve TD-LTE voice problems. A related person said: "According to different terminal forms, the initial TD-LTE voice solution is divided into a CSFB scheme and a dual standby scheme. No matter which scheme, voice services are provided by the existing 2G / 3G network. The service experience, network transformation and implementation have obvious advantages, and the commercial time is relatively early, but the actual effect depends entirely on the terminal.

At the same time, for some manufacturers that only have TD-LTE chips, dual standby allows them to cooperate with manufacturers that own TD-SCDMA chips.

This is conducive to the participation of Qualcomm and other large international manufacturers with TD-LTE solutions in the industry chain. While protecting China's independent intellectual property rights, it has also promoted the internationalization of TD-LTE.

Increased demand for single chips

Recently, Marvell launched the TD-SCDMA single-chip solution for the first time in the industry. The introduction of this chip reduces the cost of TD chips, making it a reality to launch smart phones with more economical prices and more advanced functions in the TD field. The single-chip technology integrates the functions realized by several chips into one chip, for example, integrating digital baseband, analog baseband, power management, and multimedia chips. This aspect reduces the purchase price of components; on the other hand, it reduces the development difficulty, R & D cycle and cost of terminal manufacturers.

As a pure IP technology, TD-LTE has higher data throughput and is more suitable for carrying rich Internet applications. Therefore, the future TD-LTE mobile phone must be an intelligent terminal, which provides a place for a single chip. Industry insiders said that in the LTE stage, the demand for single chips will be more intense.
