Small and medium size backlight "cheap" or accelerated domestic chip import

In the first few months of the domestic TV and mobile phone sales season, the backlight chips of Taiwan's Taiwan chip factories are full of production, which makes many mainland chip factories both jealous and helpless. The same for meager profit shipments, but the gross margin of the backlight chip is still slightly higher than the lighting chip, many mainland chip factories hope to enter the backlight supply chain.

"Domestic chips to make large-size backlights are not yet cost-effective, but many small and medium-sized sizes are now used." A vice president of the backlight packaging factory told reporters. However, according to the reporter, because they have already reached a strategic partnership with a Taiwanese chip factory, the other party has given many preferential treatments in terms of quality, delivery and price. Another Taiwanese manufacturer, who also supplies backlight chips, said frankly that the price is a key reference indicator for the mainland backlight packaging factory to purchase Taiwanese chips.

Jiang Senlai, manager of the marketing department of Shenzhen Blu-ray Technology Co., Ltd., said that some of the chips from Shanghai Blu-ray are supplied to the packaging factory to produce backlights for mobile phones and tablets. In his view, the small and medium-sized backlight market is basically in a saturated stage, and the growth rate is very limited.

According to the latest report released by international consulting firm IDC, global tablet shipments will increase by 19.4% in 2014, much lower than the growth rate in 2013. The forecast is based on the maturity of the tablet market, especially in developed countries, where the speed of upgrading equipment has slowed.

Another battlefield phone with backlighting is not very optimistic. According to the mobile phone industry data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in the first quarter of 2014, mobile phone shipments in this quarter were 100 million units, down 24.7% year-on-year. This is the seventh consecutive quarterly decline in the mobile phone industry.

At the same time, demand for high-end mobile phones, whether in developed or developing countries, is slowing, especially in developed countries, but demand for affordable mobile phones is growing rapidly. Gartner, a world-renowned consulting firm, said Samsung’s market share fell to 29.5% in the fourth quarter of last year from 31.1% in the same period last year. Apple’s market share fell to 17.8% from 20.9% in the same period last year. Samsung has had to start to force the low-end market, Apple last year tested the water 5C but unfortunately still overpriced and failed to occupy the low-end benefits.

IDC said that in 2013, in addition to the global top five smartphones, the remaining smartphone manufacturers accounted for 40% of global smartphone shipments, twice as much as in 2009. In every country, local unnamed brands are everywhere. The same is true in China, where local brands have given the mainland backlight chip factory more opportunities for development.

On the evening of March 18, 2013, Sanan Optoelectronics announced a strategic cooperation agreement with Jufei Optoelectronics. From March 2014 to March 2015, Jufei Optoelectronics purchased about 200 million LED chips from Sanan Optoelectronics, with a variable amount of 15 %. The main business of Jufei Optoelectronics is the backlight products of mobile phones and tablet computers. LED TV backlighting is its next key development goal. Jufei Optoelectronics' revenue in 2013 was about 750 million. If the performance of Jufei Optoelectronics increased by 50% in 2014, then more than 60% of the backlight products will be used by Sanan Optoelectronics' backlight chip.

Zheng Tiemin, general manager of Inspur Huaguang, said that TV backlights and mobile phones and pads are indeed good markets, but Inspur Huaguang has positioned its products in emerging markets such as electronic photo frames, and the market growth in the future will be very impressive. However, he said that the current margin of this backlight chip is not as high as that of a mobile phone or a pad.
