At 11 o’clock on November 11, 2017, the buzz of Double Eleven was still fresh. In the war room of Foxconn’s Fulian network at Longhua headquarters, the president of Foxconn Technology Group, vice presidents, and key executives from Fulian Wang IoT Smart Home Co., Ltd., including Dr. Chen Zhenguo, chairman of Sharp TV in the Chinese market, were closely monitoring the performance of Sharp TV across various platforms and tracking sales data in real-time.
When asked by the media about how Sharp managed to reclaim its top position so quickly, Dr. Chen Zhenguo proudly explained the seamless integration between Foxconn and Sharp. “This year, during Double Eleven, we broke our own previous sales record on the Lynx platform at 0:18, achieving a turnover of 200 million yuan within just 21 minutes,†he said. “This achievement gave us even more confidence that this year’s Double Eleven will surpass last year’s goals.â€
According to Dr. Chen, the 60-inch and 70-inch TV models accounted for the highest share of sales, something he was particularly proud of. This success was not accidental. Last year, Sharp introduced the concept of “70-inch for the living room and 60-inch for the bedroom,†which generated over one billion yuan in sales on Tmall. Now, both the 60-inch and 70-inch models have already seen individual sales exceeding 100 million yuan, with the 70-inch model nearly selling out.
Dr. Chen believes this reflects a growing consumer preference for larger TVs. While 55-inch models are still dominant, Sharp’s 60-inch and 70-inch models have already shifted the market’s direction. Consumers are increasingly seeking better living experiences, and large-screen TVs align with this desire.
“People naturally aspire for a better life and higher-quality products,†Dr. Chen stated. “It’s not just about branding or marketing—it’s about human instinct. Foxconn and Sharp are simply following this trend and doing what makes sense at the right time.â€
Looking ahead, Dr. Chen is confident that 2018 will belong to 60-inch and 70-inch TVs. He predicts these sizes will become mainstream and eventually trigger an industry boom. Moreover, he sees 8K as the next big wave. “The deployment of 8K and 5G technology is accelerating. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics will broadcast 8K signals, and with 5G’s bandwidth, the limitations of 8K transmission will be overcome. 8K adoption may come sooner than expected.â€
He also emphasized the importance of size in 8K adoption. “Small TVs won’t benefit much from 8K. Future 4K will dominate below 50 inches, while 8K will take hold in the 50-inch and above segment. With the maturity of 60-inch and 70-inch models, they will be the first to support 8K technology.â€
Foxconn has been investing heavily in 8K infrastructure. The 10.5-generation line factory in Zengcheng, Guangzhou, is now producing 8K LCD panels. Additionally, a similar facility is under construction in Wisconsin, USA, and an 8K industrial base is being developed in Luhu, Shenzhen. These efforts, combined with Sharp’s new 8K camera, aim to create a full 8K ecosystem.
Although Sharp entered the 8K era with the launch of AQUOS 8K TVs in Shanghai, Taipei, Tokyo, and Berlin, some industry experts questioned the feasibility of 8K due to incomplete supply chains. However, Dr. Chen remains optimistic. “With Foxconn and Sharp’s comprehensive layout, 8K will soon become a reality for consumers.â€
While Sharp TV achieved impressive sales during Double Eleven, the company hasn’t fully focused on white goods yet. Dr. Chen envisions a future where Sharp expands beyond TVs. “Black products are the key to Foxconn’s transformation. Sharp TV opened the door in the market, and now we plan to expand other product lines, invest more in the market, and make next year’s Double Eleven a broader stage for Sharp’s entire product range.â€
After years of growth, Foxconn has transformed Sharp from near-bankruptcy to a revitalized brand. Not only has it reclaimed its position among top black appliance brands, but it’s also laying the groundwork for future market leadership. The question remains—what surprises will Foxconn bring to the market next?
