UAVs have a wide range of applications beyond logistics, space measurement, security monitoring, and disaster monitoring. They are also being used as mobile base stations by telecom operators. South Korea was preparing for 5G commercialization in 2019, and telecom companies were actively exploring drone technology to develop more competitive services tailored for the 5G era.
According to Newsis, SK Telecom (SKT), Korea Telecom (KT), and LG U+ have significantly increased their investments in UAV-related projects, particularly in public safety. Industry experts believe that integrating drones with platform-based business models could unlock new opportunities. With 5G's ultra-fast network capabilities, drones are expected to deliver greater economic value and operational efficiency.
Recently, SKT partnered with the Gangwon Firefighting Headquarters to donate 230 wearable cameras and 4 drones, along with providing T Live Caster as an instant image management system. Given that 82% of Gangwon-do’s terrain is mountainous, the use of drones and advanced communication technologies will greatly enhance emergency response times, improving the chances of successful rescue operations.
The drones supplied by SKT feature enhanced waterproof and dustproof capabilities. They can withstand high-temperature water spray up to 60 degrees Celsius and remain stable even in winds of 40 km/h. During a fire simulation conducted by the Gangwon Firefighting Headquarters, the drone’s thermal imaging camera successfully detected the fire source, while its 30x optical zoom lens quickly identified trapped individuals.
SKT is also collaborating with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) on the "Development and Testing of Low-altitude Traffic Management System for UAV Safe Flight." Once completed, this system will help prevent collisions between drones and buildings, reduce privacy invasions, and mitigate risks from potential terrorist activities.
In October 2017, SKT introduced Skyship, a marine safety solution developed in partnership with Korean SMEs. This system combines a helium-filled flying body with a propeller-type drone, merging the benefits of both aircraft and drones. It is designed for effective maritime monitoring, illegal fishing detection, disaster alerts, and forest fire surveillance.
LG U+ launched its U+ Intelligent Drone Cloud Control System, which allows drone operations in no-fly zones or during nighttime. The system is now commercially available in South Korea and can be operated via PC, tablet, or smartphone. Users simply input a destination, and the system automatically manages takeoff, landing, and real-time positioning, as well as route planning. It supports both single-machine multi-person and multi-machine simultaneous monitoring.
LG U+ is also expanding its drone services into remote mountainous areas for home logistics, medical supply delivery, disaster area monitoring, coastal depth measurement, and building inspections. The company aims to broaden the use of drones across safety, aviation, and environmental monitoring sectors, further enhancing their practical value in daily life.
