About the development and innovation of big data storage technology

The field of big data has experienced rapid growth over the past five years, making it one of the most talked-about areas in technology. However, despite its popularity, it is still in its early stages of development. In this seminar, I will discuss the nature of data and the challenges that big data presents to traditional data processing technologies. I will also explore why there have been so many innovations in this field recently. 1. **Discovery and Utilization of Data Value** Among the four Vs of big data—Volume, Velocity, Variety, and Value—the most critical aspect is Value. Regardless of the size or structure of the data, what truly matters is whether it provides meaningful insights or benefits to the user. Having worked with data for over 20 years, I've never seen data hold such a high status as it does today. Society's perception of data has completely shifted. One of the biggest contributions of big data is that it has made people at all levels—from top executives to frontline workers—realize the importance of data. Today, most people agree that data is a valuable asset, much like oil or coal, with immense intrinsic value. Another significant contribution comes from internet companies, which have demonstrated how effectively data can be used and monetized. 2. **Review of Data Processing Technologies** The term "big data" on the internet is no longer debatable. But what are the real challenges facing data processing technologies? Beyond the internet sector, the data processing world is still dominated by traditional relational database management systems (RDBMS). The core design principles of these databases were developed around 30 years ago, and Oracle has long been the dominant player in the market. Other major players include IBM/DB2 and Microsoft/SQL Server, while SAP recently acquired Sybase, signaling its ambition to enter the database space. Most of these databases were originally designed for OLTP (Online Transaction Processing) applications, using row storage optimized for frequent updates. However, they are not efficient when it comes to analytical queries. Two exceptions are Teradata and Sybase IQ, both of which excel in data analysis tasks. 3. **Data Growth Accelerates, Diversification Increases, and the Big Data Era Begins** We are now living in the era of big data, which represents a fundamental shift in the sources of data. Before the internet, most data came from human-computer interactions, mainly structured data. Traditional RDBMS was sufficient to manage these data types. However, with the rise of the internet and mobile devices, data is now largely generated automatically by machines, servers, and applications. This includes unstructured and semi-structured data, such as images, videos, user behavior logs, and sensor data. These types of data are growing at an exponential rate. Big data applications focus on sorting, cross-analyzing, and mining various data types to provide users with self-service, iterative analysis capabilities. Traditional databases struggle with these requirements, opening up opportunities for platforms like Hadoop. 4. **New Data Processing Technologies and Innovations** Over the past decade, there have been numerous innovations in data processing technologies. While high-concurrency, short-transaction OLTP memory databases like Altibase and Timesten exist, most recent advancements are focused on large-scale data analysis. This includes NoSQL databases built on Hadoop, as well as NewSQL databases based on shared-nothing architectures. Examples include Greenplum, Vertica, and GBase 8a. These new databases are built on MPP (Massive Parallel Processing) architecture, use X86 servers, and run on Linux. They offer high scalability, fault tolerance, and cost efficiency. As traditional databases hit technical limits, the demand for new solutions continues to grow. 5. **MPP Relational Databases vs. Hadoop Non-Relational Databases** There are three main approaches to big data storage: - MPP-based databases, optimized for structured data analysis at the PB level. - Hadoop-based systems, ideal for unstructured and semi-structured data. - All-in-one big data appliances, combining hardware and software for seamless performance. Each has its own strengths and is suited to different use cases. 6. **The Importance of Data Warehousing** Before the internet boom, enterprises invested heavily in data warehouses to generate key performance indicators (KPIs). However, these systems were often static, slow, and difficult to use. Today, with big data, the need for more dynamic and scalable data warehousing solutions is greater than ever. 7. **What Is the Core Issue of Data Processing Technology?** The main challenge in data processing is performance. Poorly performing systems cannot keep up with the demands of modern data analytics. As data volumes grow, so do the requirements for faster, more efficient processing technologies. 8. **Summary – The Value of the New MPP Database** New MPP databases based on columnar storage and distributed computing offer significant improvements in performance and cost efficiency. They are ideal for handling large-scale structured data and are increasingly being integrated with Hadoop for comprehensive data processing. This hybrid approach meets the needs of both structured and unstructured data, paving the way for the future of big data analytics.
