In two-phase flows, such as gas-liquid or liquid-solid mixtures, vortex flowmeters can still be used under certain conditions. For example, they can measure gas-liquid flows with less than 7–10% gas content, provided the meter factor is adjusted if necessary. Similarly, they can handle liquid-solid flows with up to 2% solid content. However, pulsating or swirling flows can interfere with the readings, potentially causing signal "locking" or resonance, which may damage the device or lead to inaccurate measurements.
When installing a vortex flowmeter, it is crucial to ensure proper piping configuration. The upstream and downstream straight pipe sections must meet specific length requirements to avoid flow disturbances. For instance, a 90° elbow, concentric expansion or contraction, or multiple elbows should be positioned appropriately to minimize turbulence.
Proper installation also involves ensuring that the sensor’s inner diameter matches the pipe’s diameter within a tolerance of ±5%. The piping should be concentric with the sensor, and gaskets should not protrude into the flow path. In cases where flow checking or cleaning is required, a bypass line should be installed.
To prevent vibration-related issues, it's recommended to install the sensor away from vibration sources or use flexible connections for smaller pipes. Pipe supports can also help dampen vibrations and improve measurement stability.
Compared to other flowmeters like mass flow meters, electromagnetic meters, or turbine meters, vortex flowmeters are more cost-effective in terms of purchase, installation, and maintenance. Their simple structure and ease of use make them a practical choice for many industrial applications, including chemical plants, refineries, and water treatment facilities.
