Vishay Releases New Paired High Speed Infrared Emitter / Photodiode

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has recently introduced two new AEC-Q101 certified infrared emitter and photodiode pairs: the VSMB10940X01/VEMD10940FX01 and the VSMB11940X01/VEMD11940FX01. These compact components come in a 3mm x 2mm side-view surface-mount package, making them ideal for space-constrained applications. The VSMB10940X01/VEMD10940FX01 measures 1mm in height, while the VSMB11940X01/VEMD11940FX01 is just 0.6mm tall, offering the industry’s lowest-profile side-view design. This makes them well-suited for automotive environments that require AEC-Q101 compliance. Both devices feature an ultra-wide half-angle of ±75°, ensuring broad coverage for reliable performance in various applications. They are particularly well-suited for use in printer displays, e-book readers, smartphones, tablets, ultrabooks, and in-car multimedia systems, including infrared touchpads on navigation screens. The VSMB11940X01/VEMD11940FX01 offers a thinner profile, supporting sleeker device designs, while the VSMB10940X01/VEMD10940FX01 provides a larger sensing area for enhanced signal output. The infrared emitters utilize GaAlAs multi-quantum well (MQW) technology within a clear, colorless plastic package. They deliver a typical luminous intensity of 1 mW/sr at 20 mA, with a forward voltage of 1.3 V and a switching time of 15 ns. On the receiving end, the VEMD10940FX01 and VEMD11940FX01 photodiodes include a solar shading filter that aligns with 830nm and 950nm IR emitters, producing reverse photocurrents of 1.1μA and 3μA, respectively. These photodiodes can detect infrared light between 780nm and 1050nm, with a peak sensitivity at 950nm, a dark current of 1nA, and excellent response characteristics. In terms of reliability and environmental compliance, these components have a shelf life of 168 hours and meet MSL level 3 as per J-STD-020. They are RoHS compliant, halogen-free, lead-free, and designed for reflow soldering processes. Samples of the new IR emitter/photodiode pairs are now available, with volume production expected to begin within eight to ten weeks. This release marks a significant step forward in delivering high-performance, compact, and reliable infrared solutions for both consumer and automotive markets.
