LED lights lead the automotive lighting design revolution

LEDs lead the revolution in automotive lighting systems, affecting the design and function of the lights.

LED technology was originally only used in luxury models, and is now also used in some mainstream models, increasing the competitive advantage of these vehicles. As the price of LED lights declines, the amount of usage continues to increase. And now car manufacturers are looking for new ways to use LED lights.

Ralph Gilles, senior vice president of product design for Fiat Chrysler Automotive North America, said: "LED lights have become ubiquitous and accepted." Most of the new models at the 2015 North American International Auto Show have joined LED lights, from Ford GT, Acura The NSX super runs to the 2016 Chevrolet Volt and the 2016 Hyundai Sotana Hybrid.

LED lights are small and can be bent, they use less energy than traditional halogen bulbs. For example, two LEDs can be combined and mounted to enable daytime running lights or to achieve large area taillight illumination.

David Hulick, lighting director of lighting manufacturer Osram, said: "Design style is the main reason driving the LED revolution, and then it is functional and persistent."

The Dodge brand's latest rear track style lighting is a distinctive symbol of continuous illumination behind the car by combining a single LED into a seamless red band.
