Aerial '3D Printing': Capturing Particles in the Air with a Laser Beam

Protesting "Space Graffiti"

In the next nine months, the brightest object in the night sky will be an oversized "disco ball."

This glowing orb is a 1-meter-wide carbon fiber sphere covered with 65 highly reflective panels. It orbits the Earth every 90 minutes and reflects sunlight, making it visible from almost any point on the planet during dusk or dawn.

In New Zealand, this project has been called an "unprecedented step" in commercial space exploration. The startup Rocket Lab, which launched the satellite, gave it a poetic name — "The Human Star."

According to Rocket Lab’s CEO, Peter Baker, the goal is for everyone on Earth to share a common experience, regardless of wealth, health, or conflict. He hopes that people can momentarily forget their daily struggles and look up at the stars, reflecting on life from a new perspective.

However, this romantic vision has not won over astrophysicists. Instead, many see it as "space graffiti," criticized for polluting the night sky and creating unnecessary space debris.

Such bright artificial objects can interfere with astronomical research and contribute to the growing problem of space junk. After about nine months, the satellite will burn up while re-entering Earth's atmosphere.

More importantly, it may reduce people's sense of awe toward nature and the unknown.

Just as no one would applaud putting lights on polar bears or slogans on Mount Everest, sending a shiny "disco ball" into space is seen as anything but cool.

Aerial "3D Printing"

A glowing purple butterfly fluttered and landed on a scientist’s fingertip. It came from the future.

This image has long been imagined in science fiction, such as in "Star Wars," where R2-D2 projects Princess Leia’s face into thin air. Now, researchers from Brigham Young University have made this vision a reality — sort of.

Using a laser beam, they capture airborne particles and manipulate them to form images in mid-air. A second set of red, green, and blue lasers then illuminate the moving particles, creating a 3D effect. Scientists describe it as "printing in the air and erasing it quickly." When the movement is fast enough, the path of the particles appears as solid lines to the human eye, like fireworks in the dark.

This is the first time humans have created a true three-dimensional image in the air — more real than what we once imagined. People around it can see different perspectives of the same image. Unlike traditional holograms, which are essentially 2D illusions, this technology offers a genuine 3D experience.

Although still in its early stages, the images produced so far are small and slow. The purple butterfly, for example, is just a few millimeters in size and barely visible to the naked eye. Another researcher took 40 seconds to create a simple image of Princess Leia.

Still, this marks a significant step closer to the futuristic visions we've always dreamed of. As the technology advances, we may soon see a world where 3D images float in the air, changing how we interact with the digital world.
