MIT and Shangtang Technology established AI Alliance to explore the science behind machine intelligence
On February 28, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Shang Tang Technology, an AI-focused company founded by MIT alumnus Professor Tang Xiaoou, announced the formation of a new artificial intelligence alliance. This collaboration aims to explore the science behind machine intelligence and drive innovation in the field of AI.
Shang Tang Technology specializes in computer vision and deep learning, with a strong focus on developing cutting-edge AI technologies. The newly formed alliance will work on a wide range of AI applications, including computer vision, brain-inspired algorithms, medical imaging, robotics, and more. By combining MIT’s academic expertise with Shang Tang’s industry experience, the partnership is expected to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence research and development.
Shang Tang Technology has become the first company globally to join MIT’s recently launched Intelligence Quest (IQ) initiative. This ambitious program brings together MIT’s strengths in neuroscience, cognitive science, and computer science to advance the understanding of both human and machine intelligence. The IQ project spans multiple domains, from materials science and finance to early disease detection, and it also addresses the broader economic, cultural, and ethical implications of AI. Through this initiative, MIT seeks to foster collaboration with leading innovators and organizations worldwide.
Tang Xiaoou, founder of Shang Tang Technology and professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, expressed his excitement about the partnership: “As an MIT alumnus, I am thrilled to collaborate with my alma mater to advance AI research. This is a lifelong passion for me—developing original technologies in computer vision and deep learning. With the establishment of the MIT-Shang Tang AI Alliance, we aim to bring together top global talent to accelerate AI progress and create real-world benefits for society.â€
Professor Anantha Chandrakasan, President of the MIT School of Engineering and leader of the IQ project, added: “We are delighted to have Shang Tang Technology as a partner. Our goal is to uncover the fundamental principles of intelligence to build a better future. Shang Tang’s innovative approach aligns perfectly with MIT’s mission. This alliance will not only help MIT make breakthroughs in AI but also enable students and faculty to engage in meaningful, hands-on research with a world-class company.â€
