Google released the first developer of Android P seems to suggest the market attitude of the current lack of power glass

Google recently released the first developer preview of Android P, but this new operating system does not support the Pixel C — Google's latest tablet. This omission seems to reflect Google’s diminishing interest in the currently struggling tablet market. The tablet PC market has been in decline for years. As of Q3 2017, sales had fallen for 12 consecutive quarters. The Android tablet segment is no exception. In that same quarter, Android tablets accounted for only 62% of the market share. The shrinking scale is one issue, but another is that most manufacturers have stopped updating their tablet lines. Today, only a few companies like Samsung and Huawei continue to innovate in this space. This contrasts sharply with the early days of the tablet market when it was booming. To describe the current state of Android tablets, one might say they're “alive but dying.” They have a large form factor but lack innovation and are stuck in a downward spiral. There are several reasons behind the decline of Android tablets: **Inherent Limitations of Tablets** Initially, tablets gained popularity because they offered a larger screen than smartphones, making them ideal for media consumption and light productivity. However, over time, people realized that tablets weren’t as versatile as expected. They aren’t as portable as phones, and many lack cellular connectivity. Compared to laptops, they fall short in productivity tasks. Even the iPad Pro, often called a “productivity tablet,” still can't match the efficiency of a traditional laptop. As a result, many tablets have become little more than entertainment devices, often left unused on coffee tables. This lack of engagement discourages users from upgrading, and manufacturers are less motivated to invest in new tablet models. **Lack of App Support** One major difference between Android tablets and Apple’s iPad is the app ecosystem. Android apps often just scale up mobile versions, leading to poor user experiences. Meanwhile, Apple frequently updates its iPad-specific apps, though even those are not always optimized well. The lack of dedicated development for Android tablets makes the experience frustrating, and this trend is likely to worsen. Moreover, Google has shifted focus toward mobile phones, making Android tablets feel more like oversized smartphones. Features like productivity tools or optimized interfaces, which could make tablets more appealing, are missing. **Competition and Internal Challenges** Apple’s iPad continues to dominate due to superior performance, a strong ecosystem, and better design. Even at similar price points, many Android tablets struggle to compete. Companies like Amazon and Xiaomi have found success by targeting budget segments, but this doesn’t help the broader market. Meanwhile, the rise of two-in-one Windows tablets, such as Microsoft Surface, has further squeezed the Android tablet space, especially since these devices offer better productivity features. Google itself has also contributed to the problem. By supporting Android apps on Chrome OS, it has created an alternative to tablets, particularly in the low-end market, where Chromebooks now offer greater functionality. Despite all this, the Android tablet market isn’t completely dead. It still holds around 60% of the market share, and companies like Huawei and Amazon are finding ways to grow. With 160–200 million units shipped annually, there is still a viable market. However, if Google continues to neglect the tablet ecosystem, Android tablets may soon be overtaken by competitors.
