Can you imagine stepping into a hospital in Shenyang the next day and being greeted not by a nurse, but by a friendly medical service robot? At the "2018 Shengjing International Medical Forum" last March 13th, it was announced that the Liaoning Medical Surgery and Rehabilitation Robot Technology Engineering Research Center will be established in Shenyang. This groundbreaking initiative marks a significant step toward the future of healthcare, where robots will play an essential role in medical care.
According to Li Xuewei, deputy dean of the Xinsong Robotics Central Research Institute, most surgical robots currently used in hospitals are still dominated by foreign patents. However, this is about to change. The newly approved center, a collaboration between China Medical University Shengjing Hospital, the Shenyang Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Shenyang Xinsong Robotics Co., Ltd., will focus on developing advanced medical robots. The first product expected to hit the market is an intervention robot, signaling the dawn of a new era in healthcare.
Li Xuewei emphasized that the development of surgical robots is crucial for clinical applications. His team has over 100 researchers, and Shengjing Hospital is actively involved with top doctors who are helping to address real-world challenges in medical procedures. This strong integration between the hospital and robotics experts is accelerating progress and bringing domestic medical robots closer to breakthroughs.
At the forum, Li demonstrated several upcoming medical robots, including a smart bed and chair integrated robot set to launch in October, and a high-end intelligent nursing bed scheduled for release in April. These nursing robots are designed to assist both patients and caregivers. The smart nursing bed can automatically turn patients, clean up waste, and send real-time health data to a connected app, enabling continuous monitoring. The smart bed-chair robot can convert from a bed to a wheelchair in seconds, allowing patients to move freely and independently, offering greater freedom to those with mobility issues.
In rehabilitation, walking assist robots and lower limb rehabilitation robots are set to launch in October, significantly improving recovery times or delaying disease progression. Additionally, children with brain dysplasia can benefit from EEG-based cognitive training robots.
In surgery, Xinsong’s research covers multiple fields such as orthopedics, neurosurgery, and minimally invasive procedures. These robots can assist doctors in performing precise, micron-level surgeries.
Beyond nursing and rehabilitation, there are dosing and delivery robots that can accurately dispense medication and safely transport medical supplies. There's also a home intelligent robot named Jiale, which supports telemedicine, allows video consultations with doctors, and helps manage chronic conditions. It even offers companionship for the elderly and delivers health education. Jiale sold 1,000 units within just 10 minutes of its market launch.
With these innovations, the future of healthcare is no longer a distant dream—it’s here, and it’s powered by robots.
