Charging fault, battery decay into a new energy car 3 15 complaints focus
With the continuous advancement of new energy vehicle technology, an increasing number of consumers are turning to electric cars. However, as these vehicles become more common, some quality issues have emerged, causing frustration among owners. As 315 Consumer Rights Day approaches, reporters reviewed complaints on the People's Motor Vehicles Quality Complaint Platform and found that the most common problems include charging failures, battery degradation, refueling issues, reverse gear malfunctions, and unusual noises.
Mr. Wang from Beijing bought a Jianghuai IEV4 luxury electric vehicle in June 2017 from Fangshan Baodinglong Jianghuai 4S Store. He reported that even before completing the license procedures, the car experienced multiple issues such as charging failure, refueling problems after startup, and unexpected power cut-offs. Within three months of purchase, the car had been repaired over ten times, but the original issues remained unresolved. The air conditioning was fixed three times, and now the car is completely inoperable. In September 2017, the 4S store updated the mainboard and high-voltage board programs, but this only led to additional charging interruptions. Eventually, the factory agreed to a refund, but the process has been slow and complicated.
The 4S store representative mentioned that they haven’t received government subsidies yet and needed to wait for a period of time, which extended the resolution process by over three months. As of now, Mr. Wang still hasn’t successfully returned the car.
When contacted, Mr. He from the 4S store confirmed that the vehicle had the reported issues and had agreed to a return. However, he explained that Mr. Wang refused to bring the car in for repairs and insisted on on-site service, which limited the ability to fully resolve the problem.
Another case involved Ms. Zhao from Tongzhou District, who purchased a Beiqi EC180 in July 2017. The manufacturer installed a charging pile, but it couldn’t charge the vehicle. By January 2018, the charging pile was still just a display. Both the car manufacturer and the charging pile company blamed each other, until the charging company replaced the nozzle and restored normal charging.
According to Mr. Li, a technician from a charging station company, if a new energy car shows no charging despite proper connection, several factors could be at play: overloaded power supply, incorrect AC charging device settings, faulty vehicle or charging equipment, or display issues.
Li also advised users to maintain their batteries properly—fully charge them every 200 km (no more than 1,000 km), and if not used for long periods, charge to 100% and discharge to between 25-40%. If stored for more than three months, the battery should be charged regularly to avoid deep discharge.
In addition to charging issues, sudden power drops also cause inconvenience. Mr. Hu from Beijing shared an experience where his car showed 40% charge, but it dropped to 20% within minutes, leaving him stranded on the Fourth Ring Road. Similar issues occur when the battery level is low.
Master Yang, another owner, faced even more serious problems. Although the car had minor issues, one major concern was occasional brake failure. On one occasion, he was rear-ended because the brakes failed. He still feels uneasy about the incident.
Reporters found that such problems are not isolated. Online groups like “New Energy Rights Protection†have grown, with members sharing similar complaints. Issues include sudden power drops, abnormal sounds, battery shrinkage in winter, strange air-conditioning noises, seat belt issues, and reverse gear malfunctions.
Mr. Tian, an automotive electrical engineer, noted that many of these problems stem from electronic system faults, such as improper communication between components, leading to failures in charging, refueling, or gear shifting.
According to data from CLUCC, new energy vehicle sales reached 29,000 units in February, up 76% year-on-year. As these vehicles gain popularity, automakers must focus on improving product quality and reducing defects to ensure a better user experience.
