21ic News Aptina announced the launch of a new Clarity+TM 13 megapixel (13MP) sensor AR1331CP for smartphone applications, enabling mobile phone designers to increase the resolution of mobile phone cameras from 8MP to 13MP without compromising performance. The dramatic increase in resolution requires sensor designers to reduce pixels from 1.4 micrometers (μm) to 1.1 μm, which greatly reduces pixel performance. The Clarity+ solution starts with the standard 2x2 Bayer RGB color filter mode commonly used in image sensors throughout the industry, and then replaces all green filters with carefully optimized clear filters. This mode preserves the high-frequency spatial information of the Bayer pattern, removing aliasing artifacts that are inevitable when using green and clear filters in large core (4x4) modes. Green is determined by advanced image processing algorithms that use subtraction and interpolation techniques. Later, special noise reduction techniques were applied to improve the low optical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by 3 dB (dB) compared to the RGB Bayer mode.
Aptina's AR1331CP combines Clarity+ technology with world-class 1.1μm pixels to deliver per-pixel sensitivity, SNR and color performance comparable to the larger 1.4μm pixels used in today's 8MP smartphone cameras. By placing more than 60% of the pixels in these packages in a package of the same size, the new sensor will greatly enhance the image quality of smartphone cameras.
The AR1331CP is now available with bare chip samples and the raw output is used to support Clarity+ processing systems.
