On March 27th, Gaode Map officially launched its "Fengmian" (Windmill) service, initially available in Chengdu and Wuhan, with plans to expand to Beijing and Shanghai. As a late entrant, Gaode has taken a unique approach—operating without subsidies, aiming to avoid a costly battle over user acquisition. Many in the industry aren’t surprised by this move, as it aligns with Gaode’s broader ecosystem expansion and Alibaba’s growing influence in the travel sector. Whether it's about enhancing smart mobility or exploring driverless technologies, Gaode has every reason to be part of the game.

Beyond its mapping capabilities, Gaode has now entered the ride-sharing arena. On March 27th, the company announced the official launch of the Fengmian service, opening up recruitment for drivers in Beijing. In addition to Beijing, the service is also being rolled out in cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hangzhou, with plans to expand nationwide. Currently, the service is active in Chengdu and Wuhan, signaling a clear step forward in Gaode’s strategy.

Ms. Xu, a user from Chengdu, noticed the Fengmian option on the right side of Gaode’s homepage, just like other transportation choices such as taxis and buses. When she tried using the service, she found that the cost was slightly higher than traditional ride-hailing but significantly lower than regular taxi fares. For instance, a trip from Tianfu Square to Chengdu 339 cost 7.1 yuan via Fengmian, compared to 6.6 yuan for a regular ride and 8.2 yuan for a private car. Another trip to the New Century Global Shopping Center showed similar results—13 yuan via Fengmian versus 14.6 yuan for a ride and 19.4 yuan for a car.

Liu Zhenfei, President of Gaode Group, emphasized the environmental benefits of shared rides: “Ride-sharing is a green way to improve urban mobility. It helps reduce traffic congestion and air pollution by making better use of existing resources. However, as the market grows, some platforms have strayed from their original purpose.”

According to a report by Gaode and the Tsinghua-Daimler Sustainable Transportation Research Center, in the Beijing Five Rings area, 16.4% of trips are highly coincident, meaning they could be shared. This could reduce driving mileage by around 111 million kilometers annually, equivalent to cutting carbon emissions by 30,000 tons. Tong Yao, a Gaode representative, explained that through technology, the platform helps match existing demand with available seats, promoting carpooling and improving road utilization by 1-3% without increasing commercial capacity.

However, some data suggests that after a week of operation in Beijing, traffic congestion in areas like Haidian and Shijingshan actually increased. Platforms often rely on high commission rates—typically around 10% of the fare—to generate revenue. Gaode believes that some companies use heavy subsidies to attract drivers, artificially increasing the number of vehicles on the road and worsening traffic conditions instead of solving them.

To address these issues, Liu Zhenfei stressed that Gaode will not engage in a subsidy war. Instead, the company aims to connect existing users with real travel needs. “Fengmian will not extract commissions from users,” he said. “In fact, we even subsidize third-party services like SMS notifications and insurance, ensuring a fair and sustainable model.” This approach reflects Gaode’s commitment to responsible growth and long-term value for both users and the city’s infrastructure.
